Earth Moving Equipment: A Guide

Blog

If you are carrying out a construction project on your property which requires earth to be moved, you may be considering hiring some heavy construction equipment. Below is a guide to the different types of earthmoving equipment which are available for hire and details of which types of work they are most suited to.

Bulldozers

The large plate on the front of a bulldozer makes it the ideal choice if you need to level large areas of ground. It will also enable you to push large piles of rocks, earth and waste material from one area to another. A drawback of using a bulldozer is that it does not have the capacity to lift or scoop material off the ground in the same way an excavator can.

Excavators

Excavators consist of a tracked machine, a cab for the operator and a long arm. The arm is connected to a pivoting cable which allows it to rotate through 360 degrees. While normally fitted with a bucket attachment which allows the earth to be dug up and transported, an excavator can also be fitted with other attachments such as drills and hydraulic hammers. These tools enable the machine to be used to demolish structures.

Backhoe Loader

A backhoe loader is a small vehicle which has a larger bucket on the front and an arm on the rear which is fitted with a smaller bucket. This makes it a good choice for excavating small areas and transporting earth from one location to another. The small size of a backhoe loader makes it ideal for use on work sites which have a limited area in which to manoeuvre and work.

Motor Grade

A motor grade vehicle has a large blade which is situated on the underside of the vehicle. This blade rotates when the machine is in use and strikes the ground beneath, levelling it. Motor grade equipment is often used to level an area before construction begins.

Dumper Trucks

Dumper trucks and heavy duty vehicles are designed to transport and deposit earth and other materials. A dumper truck will generally have a hydraulic load bed onto which the material to loaded. When the dumper truck reaches its destination, one end of the hydraulic bed is raised causing the material to slide from the rear of the truck.
